____________________________________________________
Originally built in 1935 as a duplex by the current owner’s father, the Cook House left the family and served for decades as a rental property. Neglected and threatened with demolition, the house was re-acquired by a daughter who was born in the house. With the professional assistance of Volz & Associates, Inc., Cook House has been lovingly restored and expanded for use as her family’s retreat.
Key Issues
• Successfully convert a duplex into a single family home with minimal alteration of the original structure
• Design a compatible addition with a living room, master bedroom and bath, second entry, screened porch, and utility room
• Preserve and reuse as many original components as possible, including site-built kitchen cabinets, bathroom finishes, and cabinets.
• Design site drainage, the careful lifting and leveling of house, and structural repair of rotting flooring
• Creatively design a new “period” bathroom within original bedroom closets
• Selection of interior finishes using period-appropriate wallpapers based on original samples found in the house.
