Hyde Park Neighborhood

In Austin, heritage trees are a very special addition to the streetscape that merit City designation. When a large heritage oak impacted the foundation and exterior stair of this distinctive historic home, the necessary repairs required careful attention to detail.
Volz & Associates provided creative solutions to this highly restricted and unique project. Current work includes foundation stabilization and the creation of a new exterior stair to the second floor. To protect both the house and the heritage tree, concrete and steel beams were installed to bridge the tree’s root system and support the home’s exterior wall and brick veneer.
Since this house is a contributing structure in the neighborhood’s historic district, it was important to incorporate distinctive features of the original stair into the new design to preserve the home’s historic character.
